This one-day event is conceived as a forum for historians who work on different forms of internationalism and transnational co-operation in the interwar years. Many accounts of the period between 1919 and 1939 construct a narrative of the rise and fall of internationalism, focusing on the seemingly ill-fated hopes vested in the League of Nations, the Locarno and the Kellogg-Briand pacts, and the rise of aggressive nationalisms and totalitarian regimes against the backdrop of the economic upheavals of the 1930s. In contrast to this, the workshop explores the remarkable vitality of interwar internationalism, with a special focus on border-transcending collaboration. Papers at the event will shed light on these issues from a variety of angles, discussing the different organisations, groups and individuals that shaped interwar internationalism.

The workshop is funded by the UCL Graduate School, the European Doctorate Programme "Building on the Past" (FP6), and the Royal Historical Society. It is taking place under the auspices of the UCL Centre for Transnational History.
